Erik Higgins is a double bassist with an omnivorous taste in style. He began early music performance practice under the mentorship of Stanley Richie and has since been active in early music throughout the United States and Europe. He plays regularly with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque as well as at the Staunton Music Festival.
In addition to early music, Erik trained at the Academy of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra where he completed the two-year post-graduate orchestral internship in Munich, Germany. Shortly afterward, he was offered a tenured position at the Hamburg State Opera where he remained for 4 years.
In 2013, he left Germany to join A Far Cry chamber orchestra – the democratic, self-conducted, and equally musically omnivorous string ensemble based in Boston – where he has also served on the Board of Directors and as the Chair of Artistic Planning. In addition to performing and programming, Erik arranges regularly for A Far Cry, including works by Prokofiev, Daft Punk and traditional Swedish Fiddling.
Erik is also co-founder of the folk/pop band Britton Park and is very interested in folk, jazz and indie music, which he finds to be a continual source of inspiration.
