Experience the splendor and diversity of Baroque keyboard music at “Baroque North and South,” a concert weaving together rich tapestries of sound from Scandinavia to Italy.

Harpsichordist Carsten Schmidt returns to CMSCVA to be your guide on a musical journey through the extraordinary music that shaped a continent. From the north is Dieterich Buxtehude, the influential Dane whose works bridged the gap between early and late Baroque. Traveling south we meet Johann Jakob Froberger, the cosmopolitan artist blending Italian virtuosity with French elegance, and the Frenchman Louis Couperin and his nephew François (“Le Grand”) who together perfected the elegant art of the French “clavecin.” Finally landing south of the Alps we encounter Girolamo Frescobaldi, the pioneer of expressive keyboard music. These musical styles are synthesized in the music of two towering Baroque figures, J. S. Bach and George Frideric Handel.

Join CMSCVA for an afternoon of dazzling virtuosity, intimate lyricism, and the timeless beauty of an iconically Baroque instrument.
