From Viennese prodigies to modern-day visionaries, join CMSCVA for an evening of Hollywood magic. Dive into the playful spirit of the 1920s with Bohuslav Martinů’s La Revue de Cuisine, the delightful jazz-ballet that captures the moment European ‘Old World’ composers fell in love with the syncopated ‘New Voice’ of American jazz and the Charleston. We trace the lineage of the film score with Korngold’s Romantic Piano Trio in D major, a work of European mastery that paved the way for his epic film scores of the 1930’s. The journey continues with the hypnotic pulse of Philip Glass’s music for The Hours and the groundbreaking contemporary sounds of Michael Abels. The centerpiece of our program is a live-to-picture screening of Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr. Often called the first great ‘meta-movie,’ this silent comedy classic will be accompanied by a live score of historic silent movie music. Experience the wit, the stunts, and the musical soul of the cinema.
