STEPHANIE ZYZAK

Stephanie Zyzak VIOLIN Praised for her sensitive musicianship and heartfelt playing, violinist Stephanie Zyzak is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most soulful and profound musicians of her generation. At the age of seven, Stephanie made her first solo appearance with the Starling Chamber Orchestra at the Aspen Music School and became the youngest recipient ever to be awarded the Aspen Music School New Horizon Fellowship. The following year, she performed in Germany as an invited guest of the Internationale Kunst – Akademie Liechtenstein (IKAL). Since making her debut in 2004 with the Louisville Orchestra, Stephanie has performed as a soloist throughout Germany, Russia, Austria, Sweden, Spain, Italy, France, and with orchestras including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic, Southeast Missouri Symphony, and the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra. Recent and upcoming season highlights include performances at Caramoor, Carnegie Hall, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert series, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Vancouver Chamber Music Society, and on tour with Mitsuko Uchida and Musicians from Marlboro as part of Carnegie Hall’s Perspective Series. A deeply passionate chamber musician, Stephanie frequently collaborates and appears in concerts with musicians including Mitsuko Uchida, Jonathan Biss, Kim Kashkashian, Hsin-Yun Huang, Alice Neary, Danny Phillips, Marcy Rosen, and Peter Wiley. She has also performed at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Caramoor, the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, and the Marlboro Music Festival, where she has toured extensively with Musicians From Marlboro. Born in South Carolina, Stephanie is a graduate of New England Conservatory and has studied with Miriam Fried and Mark Steinberg. MIMI SOLOMON

Mimi Solomon PIANO American pianist Mimi Solomon brings warmth, sensitivity and curiosity to her multifaceted career as a chamber musician, soloist, teacher, and artistic director. She has performed throughout the United States, China, Japan and Europe, has appeared as soloist with orchestras including Shanghai Symphony, Philharmonia Virtuosi, and Yale Symphony Orchestra, and has been featured on numerous radio and television broadcasts including the McGraw-Hill Young Artist’s Showcase, France 3, France Inter, and National Public Radio. An avid chamber musician, she has appeared at music festivals on both sides of the Atlantic such as Santander, IMS Prussia Cove, Lockenhaus, Rencontres de Bel-Air, Ravinia, Taos, Norfolk, Yellow Barn, Charlottesville, and La Loingtaine.  She regularly performs and records with her husband, violinist Nicholas DiEugenio. Their award-winning duo project, “Unraveling Beethoven” includes a full cycle of Beethoven violin sonatas alongside newly commissioned response works by Allen Anderson, D.K. Garner, Robert Honstein, Jesse Jones and Tonia Ko. Their first recording, released on New Focus, was praised as a “touching, committed tribute” (I Care If You Listen) to the late Steven Stucky. Mimi is also an enthusiastic and dedicated pedagogue: she is co-artistic director of MYCO Chamber Players and she is currently on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has taught at Kinhaven as well as at Cornell University, East Carolina University, and Ithaca College.  Her students have been accepted to schools including Juilliard, Colburn, New England Conservatory, Peabody and Yale.‍Mimi lived in Paris for several years, during which, in addition to being active as a chamber musician and soloist, she gained an assiduous understanding of where to find all the best French delicacies! THOMAS SCHNEIDER

Thomas Schneider BASSOON Thomas Schneider joined the Richmond Symphony as Principal Bassoon in September of 2012. Before joining the Richmond Symphony, Tom was a fellow for two years at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. Tom holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and a Master of Music degree from the University of Maryland. His primary teachers are Sue Heineman, George Sakakeeny, Yoshi Ishikawa, and Debbie Torpe. Tom has appeared at many of the country’s top festivals including the Tanglewood Music Center, National Orchestral Institute, National Repertory Orchestra, and the Sarasota Music Festival. Tom made his first solo appearance with the Richmond Symphony in the fall of 2014 performing Peter Schickele’s Bassoon Concerto and recently performed Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in April 2022. Outside music, Tom loves to read, hike along the James River, and climb the beautiful mountains in his native Colorado. REBECCA ANDERSON

Rebecca Anderson VIOLIN Violinist Rebecca Anderson has appeared worldwide as a recitalist and chamber musician. Known for her “incisive musicality” (The Oregonian), recent appearances include chamber music performances at Carnegie Hall, the alumni Continuum series at Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, and tours across Europe, Asia, and South America.  Ms. Anderson’s passion for chamber music has led to festival appearances with Music@Menlo, Chamber Music Northwest, the Savannah Music Festival, Music From Angel Fire, and Verbier Festival. Performance highlights include collaborations with Ani and Ida Kavafian, Itzhak Perlman, Andre Watts, David Shifrin, Ben Folds, and Questlove. She has performed on concerts presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Baryshnikov Arts Center, and Library of Congress.  Solo appearances have taken Ms. Anderson across the country with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Oregon Symphony, Olympia Symphony, and Columbia Symphony orchestras. As a recitalist, she has toured internationally, with recent concerts in New York, California, Oregon, and Texas. Ms. Anderson was a first prize winner at the 2013 American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition. Other awards include the bronze medal and Bach Award at the Stulberg International String Competition, as well as the youngARTS Gold Award, which led to being named a Presidential Scholar in both the Arts and Academics.​A frequent guest with conductorless chamber orchestras, Ms. Anderson has toured with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and has served as Guest Concertmaster with A Far Cry and The Knights. DAVID LEMELIN

David Lemilen CLARINET A native of Québec, Canada, David Lemelin is currently Principal Clarinetist with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (RSO), and holds adjunct positions with the University of Richmond and the College of William & Mary. Before joining the RSO, David was 2nd/Eb clarinetist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, after previously serving a 4-year fellowship with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach where he had the opportunity to work with a wide array of renowned musicians and conductors. In November 2011, David was a winner of the New World Symphony Concerto Competition, appearing as a soloist with the orchestra. In addition, he has played with other orchestras in North America, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and the Orchestre Symphonique de Sherbrooke. David received his Master of Music in Clarinet Performance from DePaul University in Chicago and his Bachelor of Music from McGill University in Montreal, also in Clarinet Performance. His main teachers have included Larry Combs (formerly of the Chicago Symphony), Robert Crowley (formerly of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal), and Nathalie DeGrâce. DEVIN GOSSETT

Devin Gossett HORN Devin Gossett joined the Richmond Symphony Orchestra as Second Horn in 2019 and joined the faculty at the College of William and Mary as Horn Instructor in 2022. He performs regularly with chamber groups of the Richmond Symphony and is a member of the Atlantic Chamber Ensemble. Devin has performed with several orchestras across the country, such as the Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has toured internationally with the Boston Symphony and Phildelphia Orchestra and has performed with both groups at Carnegie Hall. Additionally, he has played with the Boston Symphony for several summers at Tanglewood. Devin can be heard on various recordings including the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s album Elektra (2019), and the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s albums Shostakovich Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, 12 and 13 (2023), Strauss (2022) and Grammy nominated album Adès Conducts Adès (2020). In past summers, Devin has been a member of the Tanglewood Music Center, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Lucerne Festival Academy, and Spoleto Festival, USA. Devin earned his Master of Music at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and served as graduate assistant to Professor Gail Williams. During his time in Chicago, he played principal horn on Mahler’s 5th Symphony for Northwestern’s international tour to China and was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for two seasons. An Ohio native, Devin earned his Bachelor of Music at The Ohio State University as an Aldridge Scholar and cum laude graduate. His primary teachers include Gail Williams, Jon Boen, and Bruce Henniss. James Wilson CELLO AND BAROQUE CELLO For more than thirty years, cellist James Wilson has nurtured and enjoyed an exciting and varied career as performer, educator, and composer, bringing the joy of music to audiences throughout the world, from small towns to the world’s most illustrious venues. Acclaimed for his singing tone, and intelligent and soulful approach to music, the Los Angeles Times described Wilson as a musician “with something to say and a commanding way of saying it.” As soloist, chamber musician, and conductor, he has appeared in many of the world’s most illustrious performing spaces, including America’s Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Sydney Opera House, the Basilica of Notre-Dame in Montreal, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Musikverein in Vienna. He has performed at music festivals around the world such as the Hong Kong Arts Festival, the City of London Festival, the Deutches Mozartfest in Bavaria, the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland, the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, and the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. The multi-faceted Mr. Wilson is a member and has been the Artistic Coordinator of the Grammy-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and regularly serves as guest principal cellist of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. A lover of period performance practice, Mr. Wilson performs on Baroque cello throughout North America and Europe. His performances have been broadcast on West German Radio and Bavarian Radio in Germany, CBC radio in Canada, BBC Radio in Britain, Finish Radio, and National Public Radio. Oct. 14, 7PM – SWEPT AWAY!

The freedom and joy of 1930’s Germany cabaret culture was swept away by the winds of fascism and war. Travel back to this unique period in musical history with songs and instrumental works by banned and émigré composers from the time, and “For a Look or a Touch,” a moving chamber opera by contemporary American composer Jake Heggie. Nov. 9, 2PM – Free Concert – OPUS 20: THE SUN

Celebrate CMSCVA’s 20th anniversary (and the dawn of chamber music) with music by the “father of the string quartet,” Joseph Haydn, and young composers from Richmond in this sun-themed concert. The premiere of a new work by Richmond native Kyle Valorose joins music from Haydn’s collection nicknamed the “Sun Quartets,” opus 20, in which Haydn developed compositional techniques that were to define chamber music for the next 200 years.
